I've been feeling a change of tide lately in society. It doesn't seem to have fully manifested yet, but there seems to be an increased electrical charge in the air, a pull away from one phase and into another, like shifting tectonic plates. Capitalism and living excessively is a waning trend.

I feel it in my own life as well; a desire for simplicity and nostalgia for a time when there were less responsibilities and more time for doing whatever you want.

This passage on Bohemia is inspiring, though I know myself well enough to know the nervousness I would inevitably feel without any kind of security net.

This interview with Joel Salatin about Slow Living in the current issue of Dumbo Feather is pretty awesome too.

I am so tempted to throw a couple of angular windows into the cabin reno. Problem is, they can look too "generic mountain cabin" in the wrong context. If we were to do it, it would be in an attempt to go a bit '70's modern, referencing Tahoe's building boom in an ironic way. This would probably mean a less symmetrical approach -- more like this one slit window in a white room than a full peak of windows.*

*p.s. the rest of this house is pretty amazing too. Love the absence of window trim...

I've been fascinated by this project by James Turrell for years now. Roden Crater is an extinct volcano in the Arizona desert that Turrell is slowly and meticulously transforming into a monumental work of art and naked eye observatory. Like most of his work, this project will be interactive, connecting the viewer's position on earth with light installations and celestial phenomena.

Turrell has been working on this project for over 30 years, and the dedication alone is enough to marvel at. Here he is below:

Hi All,

I am afraid that this blog has lost it's direction now that the wedding is over. I may visit every once in a while, but I will be posting more frequently here.

...Oh yeah, did I ever tell you what that secret project I was working on was? I didn't? So sorry!

I opened a shop! It's called Magpie and Rye and it's a part of the Prairie Collective in San Francisco. Three close friends and I decided that instead of opening or own separate shops it would be so much more fun to open one space with all of our shops in it! Now we can hang out and be creative together...And one of those businesses just happens to be the uber-talented girls of Studio Choo, so the shop smells amazing and there are fresh flowers every day.

Please consider this an open invitation to stop by sometime and say hello, if you are ever in the neighborhood...

The Music.

When it came to music, our friends Sammy D and Shane were the obvious choice. They don't really do weddings, but their music selection and programming skills are exceptional, and they play what we like. We really wanted to play music that we actually listen to at our wedding.

Upon my dad's suggestion, he walked me down the aisle to The Jesus and Mary Chain's 'My Girl', and our recessional was Digital Underground's 'Tie the Knot'.

During dinner, we let the El Michels Affair album of Wu Tang intrumentals play which was fun because it is jazzy enough for the older guests and our generation really got a kick out of it once they recognized a song or two.

Frederick (a.k.a. Mr. Peacock).

Who needs swans when there is a peacock and his lady-friend peahen running around?

Somehow I completely forgot about these two in the months leading up to the wedding.

A couple of years ago a lone peahen started hanging around the house. She was very curious, always checking out what we were up to when we would stay there. Sometimes she would even wander in the house, which always gave us the feeling that she was lonely. We often considered finding her a mate to keep her company.

A year later, out of the blue, Frederick showed up at the house as well! We have no idea where these two came from, but they seem to like it there and we are SO happy that the little peahen has company now. These days Frederick is the bold one, and the hen has been a bit bashful. We are hoping there will be little peacocks running around next year.

Cool thing I remember about the wedding #1:

Having a day-of wedding coordinator would have been great. The candles would have been lit in the lanterns (which would have been nice considering the time and $ that took!), dessert announced and toasts a bit more organized, but I am so glad that I got to be a part of setting up that day.

I don't wear make-up and cut my own hair, so the idea of sitting in a chair all day having all that done for hours made me want to eat tacks. Instead of that, I spent the day setting up chairs, moving (super heavy) wood tables and then swimming in the pool as a quick reward for all that work.

Don't get me wrong, everything did not go perfectly -- I didn't get our vows typed out until 1 p.m., and my hair looked a little like a helmet because I ended up with 5 minutes to do it -- but I actually got to spend quality time with some of my favorite people. My little brother hung the swing with his McGyver knot-tying skills; my dad, my sister's boyfriend and my mom's boyfriend moved tables and chairs; and the Husband and his brother helped our friends set up the music.**

All the while, the Amazing Choos were flitting around finishing the flowers and my darling, pint-sized BFF lugged cushions as big as she around the property.

By the time I got around to showering, our guests were already arriving and sweet-talking the caterers into opening the wine before the ceremony (somehow I knew our families wouldn't be able to wait!).

Of course, it helps when you are getting married at your grandmother's home, so the distance between the tables and your room is only a few feet.

**I did allow them many breaks to watch the World Cup, because it is the World Cup after all, and I'm not that mean.
